LES MILLS SMARTSTEP™ and SMARTBAR™ secure prestigious design awards

Les Mills’ equipment innovations have scored big at the prestigious New Zealand Best Design Awards. The LES MILLS SMARTSTEP™ picked up the Gold Pin for Best Consumer Product Design and the highly-coveted Purple Pin, while the Les Mills SMARTBAR™ secured the New Zealand Best Effect Design Award.

Judges described the LES MILLS SMARTSTEP™ as a highly refined and cleverly detailed fitness product that provides evidence of Les Mills’ commitment to great design. “It shows a determination to compete against global brands and to lead the market with a strong design language integrated with ergonomic and usability improvements that revolutionize the total exercise experience,” said Judge Tony Parker.

The Les Mills SMARTBAR™ was deemed to be an exemplary product that demonstrates hard-hitting commercial acumen. The judges, led by convener, Noel Brown, noted that, “the innovative redesign of the barbell dealt to the limitations and challenges of traditional barbells, opening up new revenue streams and reinforcing the Les Mills brand on an international level”. They went on to highlight the SMARTBAR™ as a stunning commercial success.

The Best Design Awards recognize and celebrate New Zealand’s best product, spatial, graphic and interactive designs of the year. This year there were 778 entries received.  The awards were accepted by the Les Mills International design team, headed by David Lovegrove of 4ormfunction, at an impressive ceremony attended by close to 1000 people at Auckland’s Viaduct Centre on October 11.

This year’s wins follow on from success in 2012, when the SMARTBAR™ was awarded both the Gold Pin for Best Consumer Product Design and the Purple Pin, otherwise known as the Supreme Award.  In May 2013, the SMARTBAR™ was also awarded the International Red Dot Award, a German design award that is considered to be one of the world’s most prestigious.

The SMARTBAR™, which is used in group fitness classes such as BODYPUMP™ and LES MILLS GRIT™, was launched in March 2012 and is now available in 50 countries.
